IT professionals are often very good at finding technical solutions to problems but possibly not so adept at recognising what the problem the user has actually is.
norwegian blue start by liaising with the customer to determine the actual needs, before the technical solution is specified. Only then does that information get 'translated' into language that describes the technical solution.
The first step in the process is to write a 'functional requirements specification'. This need not be a long formal document, (though sometimes it is) but it details the actual needs of the customer – what the customer wants the IT solution to do for them and the benefits they want to get from the solution.
Only once this is done can a technical solution be specified that will meet the actual needs of the customer.
